Johnny was born on June 22, 1982, in Santa Monica, California to Regis Devenanzio an army veteran, and Laura Avery a stay-at-home mom who raised him and his sister Hillary Rose. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University to major in economics and had started working on the season of The Freal World; Key West. He was nicknamed Bananas while at Penn State University as his pranks always impressed everyone.
He dated his teammate and castmate Morgan Willet who is the winner of Big Brother; Over the Top. They started being a couple after filming season three of The Challenge. Unfortunately, they split in September 2021 after Johnny was accused of being unfaithful.
