Whether it’s just a quick pick-me-up from home, or on the way to work in the morning. It feels like we run on coffee these days!
So, we’re going to be interested in finding better ways to make better coffee!
It’s generally become accepted wisdom that to make the best coffee possible, you need to have a good coffee filter. Otherwise, your coffee will just end up gritty, and not at all pleasant to drink.
In these scenarios, it can feel like running out of coffee filters is just throwing a hot pot of coffee down the drain.
But don’t worry. While coffee filters certainly make things easier, they aren’t the only way that you can filter out and thin your coffee blend into a cup of a morning pick-me-up.
By following the methods that we have covered in this guide, you’ll be able to make great coffee, without the need for filters!
Full Immersion Method
Being a very popular method of brewing coffee, full immersion allows the coffee beans or granules to steep in boiling water for extended periods, making for a delightfully strong, powerful, and flavored brew.
So, how exactly do you achieve this style of coffee blend with a good filter?
How To
All you’ll need for this particular method is an electric kettle, and some kitchen towels and/or cheesecloth.
To start with, simply heat the water in your kettle with the usual intended method, whether that is heating it on a hob, or on the implement that your electric kettle usually uses.
Once the water has reached boiling point, allow the water for a little while, while at the same time adding two teaspoons of your coffee powder/beans to a glass beaker/jug.
For this method, we used medium coarse ground coffee, so the results may appear a little differently depending on how fine your mix is.
With the ground coffee in your jug, you can now pour that hot water over your coffee, around 6 to 8 ounces ideally. We would recommend slowly pouring the water over, to make sure that as much of the coffee smoothly blends with the water as possible.
Stir the contents of the coffee, then let it sit for around 4 minutes. This will give the coffee and water enough time to blend and brew.
With the coffee brewed, place your kitchen towels or cheesecloth over your coffee cup or flack, then gently pour the coffee into the vessel, leaving the granules behind. Make sure to be extra gentle when pouring through kitchen towels, so that they don’t tear.
And there you have it. A fresh cup of filtered coffee!
Cold Brew Method
Iced coffees have quickly become some of the most popular drinks in the world, so we’re eager to share this iced coffee-making process that we have found!
How To
This method will also require some kind of filtering layer, such as kitchen towels or cheesecloth, ideally one that is double-layered.
To start with, you’ll want to add 10 to 13 tablespoons of ground coffee into a jar of some kind, ideally one that can be enclosed, but not necessary. Then you can add roughly ounces of water to the mix, enough for an approximately 6:1 ratio of water to coffee.
(If you’re struggling to work out the ratios, just ration it out to a cup of ground coffee for every 6 cups of water.)
Stir the mixture with a spoon, then leave it to sit and cool in a fridge for between 7 and 12 hours.
After the time is up, place your kitchen towel or cheesecloth over a jug of choice, then slowly pour your mix through the cloth and into the jug, keeping most of the ground coffee in the cloth or towel.
After this, you can add ice cubes, and dilute them with more water or milk to your heart’s content!
It’s a simple technique, but one that makes a mean cool coffee to drink on a summer’s day!
Drip Coffee
This technique might take quite a while, especially when compared to other warm coffee brews. But it produces an amazing cup to enjoy afterward, even without a filter.
How To
You’ll need to use a paper towel for this method, as it requires something that can be malleable and can be folded and drained easily within a drip coffee maker to avoid damaging it.
For this method, fold the corners of the paper towel against each other, then fold it down the middle from the pointed edge.
With a small triangle towel that has been folded twice, you can then cut the flat side by finger width, before then unfolding it.
This allows the paper towel to fit inside a drip coffee maker, and act as a substitute for a normal coffee filter. Then simply place the triangle substitute filter into the drip cone like you would a normal filter.
It’s a little tricky to get the hang of at first, but you’ll find that it works surprisingly well.
Turkish Coffee
A popular way of drinking coffee in (you guessed it) Turkey, this is a coffee blend that people can’t get enough of once they’ve tried it.
How To
You’ll need a pot, finely ground coffee, hot water, and a little sugar (if you have a sweet tooth).
Add a heaped teaspoon of coffee to the pot per cup you’re having, then your sugar if you’re having any, 2 fluid ounces of water, then stir.
Put the pot on the stove on low heat, and wait for the foam to build up on top. Scoop that foam off, add it to your cup(s), then keep heating until your coffee starts boiling.
Gently pour the coffee in, wait for the grain to settle, and you can enjoy your Turkish-style coffee!
Final Notes
So, there you have it. Three different ways to create a good cup of coffee without the need for a filter.
The most important objects to have handy, regardless of the technique you’re using, is to have a good cheesecloth or paper towels, and a little patience to match.
If you’ve got these, then you’ll be ready to make amazing coffee in no time, without needing to worry about a filter.
Just make sure you’re prepared to clean up a little after you’re finished!
