She was-active in many Mexican states for her business purposes, but often avoided publicity and scandal.

Spouse: Amado Carrillo Fuentes

The life of Sonia Barragan Perez has become intertwined with one of Mexico’s legendary criminals when she wed Amado Carrillo Fuentes who preferred to be referred as the lord of the skies.

This nickname was derived from the fact that Carrillo Fuentes relied a lot on airplanes to transport contraband across borders and even developed one of the bigger Aeroplan transport systems in operation at his time.

This marriage thrust Sonia right in the middle of a play that would outline most of her adult life as a tangled web of relations and incidents. Unlike other women involved in the drug business, she operated discreetly and performed family and private business affairs when she was still married to Carrillo Fuentes.

They enjoyed many perks throughout the course of their marriage which was less of a fairy tale, as many might imagine given the husband’s status. Fuentes and Carrillo married in a bid to solidify the power that the two families had over organized crime in Juárez, and it fell apart when Carrillo died in 1997, possibly from liposuction in Mexico City.

After getting married and after the death of her husband, Sonia was able to show astonishing ability to overcome obstacles. They had to deal with probe scrutiny of the religious institutions while minimizing the impact on her family as she provides stability for her family.
